This is what we are making today.A big blue color broken egg with twitter engraved on it.All we need is a photoshop.

I don’t consider this tutorial tough but some basic knowledge about photoshop is a must.You will learn clipping mask in this tutorial.

Alright let’s get started:

Step1:
Open a big/wide document in photoshop,size i choose here is 1200 x 1200 px. But it depends on you what size you prefer.

Step2:
Create new layer and name it egg-shape.Then take ellipse tool and shape layer option selected and draw a oval like shape shown in following figure.

Step3:
Now take a direct selection tool and play with the square nodes to make a shape of egg.If it is hard for you to make the shape then you can use my custom egg shape. Download egg-shape

One you done playing with your shape you will get not so bad egg shape.Now duplicate it and resterize it.

Step4 :
Now create a new layer and add clipping mask.Cause we just want to play with egg.Clipping is a good practice to do such kind of stuffs.
The below image will show how you can achieve clipping mask .
Left side is showing you to create a new layer and and then hold alt key between egg-shape-copy layer and new layer and when this ” two circle with arrow” comes click left mouse button.We will be doing this in whole tutorial.

And right image showing that we have done clipping mask.

Now in layer 3 according to my tutorial.Take paint tool with color set to any dark blue color like- #1d6279 and fill the layer.Why we are doing this cause we want to give a crisp border to our egg of 1px.
Don’t be lazy and don’t use stroke here.

you got dark color on egg.Good now to create a border-let the layer 3 selected and hold ctrl/cmd (win/ mac ) keys and click on egg-shape layer thumbnail. It will make selection to egg layer and then go to Select -> Modify -> contract and give 2px value and then press delete.

You will get the border.Here are two images showing how to do that.

After performing the above step your layer 3 should look like this.Egg should get a border.

Step5: let’s create a solid egg
Create new layer add clipping mask if not already added.Then take a round soft brush and and choose some dark blue color like -#0F5264
and brush over egg like this(image below) then give it a gaussian blur of 50.2%.That’s it you just achieved the some egg shape.

Next to achieve some more depth to egg lets add some lights.Create a new layer (add clipping mask if not added ) and again take a soft brush with color #75cdee and paint over egg like this(see image below ) and give it the same gaussian blur value.( 50.2 )

Remember this light effects depends on you lighting source.You not need to be add the same effect.You can change the light effects.

Step 6: Add more lights
To make it more real i have added some more lights and given them the same blur.For each lighting effect i created new layer with clipping mask.

Step 7:
I am showing you in fast forward.We have just created the egg and lets add a shadow below it.You can see the final egg plus how we are adding shadow to it.

Now to add shadow below egg.Create a layer below basic egg shape and with elliptical marque tool -> draw a shape like this and fill be dark color.Any color but not pure black.And then add small gaussian blur to it.

Point: You can see the egg is looking little shiny in above picture and real egg does contain some rough texture.So to achive that rough hardness.I have add noise filter of 3 % starting from – egg-shape then all the above layers.

In below image you can see what i mean.Compare the egg roughness with above images.Also you can see the shadow effect below egg.

Step 8:Add twitter text

Now i have used ” Duepuntozero black ” font to write twitter.Either you can use some other text or you can download it from Dafont.

Now write twitter text- size i have used is 18px.

Step 9:Make it look like engraved

To make twitter text engraved add some color overlay of #2f83a6 and some dark inner shadow of #231f1e.See in image below

An the output of above setting is -

Cool !. We just created a awesome twitter egg.Now lets break it and fry it on pan.

Step 10: Beaking the egg

Now breaking egg depends on your imagination.I didn’t want to mess up things so i just broke some part of egg.You can do what ever you want with your egg. Just use your imagination.
To do so first select the all layers in layer panel -> then press ctrl + g to group them and then press ctrl +E to merge this egg layer.And hide the original egg group.

Step 11:
In step 11 make a selection of some part of you egg like shown in below image with polygonal lasso tool.

And after selection press ctrl+x and create new layer and press ctrl + v.To get the broken part of egg.See the following image.

we need all parts of broken eggs.So make sure you don’t throw away any.

Step 12:Let give it originality

Duplicate the big broken egg -> change its color overlay to either gray or very dark blue.See image below

Ok and now put it below the egg shape and with the help of arrrow key move it right+up ( just little to create 3d effect ) name this layer “front 3d “. And with any selection tool remove unnecessary part. Shown in image below:

Now to give it more 3d look just dulicate unbroken egg and put it behind the broken egg and change the color overlay to – #2a94bc

Step 13:
Now do the same process we done with front part.
1. Cut it
2. Duplicate it and create 3d part.

Ok half the process done.You can see the egg is looking flat.To make it more realistic i added some dark color inside egg.So that it looks like real.

Step 14:
To achieve that realistic effect.Take a soft black brush with 30 – 40 px.And add as shown in image below:-

Step 15:
Now this step is not necessary but if you really want to add detail.You can use this step.
In this step i have added some lighting effect to egg 3d layers.See the image below:

How i did it ?

Very simple.Just select “front 3d” portion by holding ctrl and clicking on front 3d layer thumbnail.Once it gets selected -> create a new layer above it -> name it lighting,and with white soft brush add some lights.That is it.

Step 16:Repeat the same process with other part of eggs too.Include broken part too in this process.

Now tell me do you thing you can break a egg so precisely that egg doesn’t get cracks while breaking ?

Answer should be no. If yes than you do not need to carry further steps.Those who think cracks will come surely they can go further.

Step 17: Bring some cracks on egg

Take polygonal lasso tool and draw some random shapes and fill it with gray. See image below what i mean

First i created this crack with tool i mentioned and then i filled it with gray color in new layer above egg shape.

similarly you can create more such cracks.Depends on your imaginations.

Final Step :
you can also use liquify filter to play with cracks.Here is how you can do it if you want.

Select crack shape and then go to filter => Liquify => turbulence tool.

And after completion we have Broken twitter egg icon.

I played with it some more and ended up something like this.If you want tutorial of effect shown below too .Then let me know.
